A spectacular display of precision and instinct, these brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) perform their aerial ballet over the waters of Lima, Peru. Diving with remarkable accuracy, they create dramatic splashes as they snatch fish from the surface.

Yet, while the pelicans exert their energy hunting, hundreds of Franklin’s gulls (Leucophaeus pipixcan) wait patiently on the dock, anticipating the arrival of fishing boats.
